          Who Was Saint Katharine Drexel?

          In 1891, Saint Katharine Drexel left her life as an heiress behind when she became a nun.

          She subsequently founded the order of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and used her fortune to create new schools for Native Americans and African Americans across the United States. She died in 1955 at age 96 and was canonized as a Catholic saint in 2000.

Her mother, Hannah Jane (née Langstroth) Drexel, died a month after Drexel's birth; in 1860, her father was married again, to Emma Bouvier.           Drexel was raised as a young heiress in Philadelphia and was educated at home.
