             Roger Williams organized the first Baptist church in America.  He was also founder of the state of Rhode Island.  Those are remarkable accomplishments for a man who was shunned and persecuted by others who came to the New World to find religious liberty.
             Born in , Williams was raised in the Church of England.  At age twenty, he was admitted to Pembroke Hall, Cambridge University.  Although, he graduated from Cambridge in , and was ordained in the 
          Church of England in , it was obvious even then that his theological views were not always in agreement with his teachers and peers.
             While serving in his first assignment as the chaplain to the Masham household in Essex County, he came to know many powerful Puritan leaders in Parliament.  Due to their influence, he became convinced in the beliefs of separation of church and sta
